Costumed Self Portrait Series-Cardboard Corset

During the period 1988 to 1999, I made several costumes / wearable sculptures. The finished pieces consisted of self portraits with me performing the personality of the costume, as well as the costume itself. This piece from 1988-89, is the first costume / wearable sculpture that I made. The corset itself was made of cardboard that I cut out like a paper pattern and then sewed together. The painted design on the cardboard was inspired by the Op Art of Bridget Riley The backpack is made of lightweight wood. My friend, Gerlinde Huth, took these photos. For this piece I had not yet begun to perform the character of the costume for the camera.
