In November 2002, my third solo exhibition opened in the Inter Americas Space at the Caribbean Contemporary Arts Centre CCA7. The starting point for this body of work was my fertility cycle. The work in the show looked at the 4 phases of a woman's monthly cycle.
I had begun to chart my fertility as a form of contraception. The method involves consistently collecting data and tabulating the information on a graph, as well as observing other changes in the body.
The work for the show was divided into 4 sections. The first Menstruation - From Menarche to Menopause consisted of one large painting. The yoga posture, baddha konasana is good for relieving menstrual cramps. The concentric circles over the body represents the idea that we will have only a finite number of cycles during our fertile years from our first period -menarche, to our last- menopause.
